Kyiv's old dacha quarter by the forest

Sviatoshyn

Sviatoshyn is a historic neighbourhood in the west of Kyiv, and a house here comes with more than a century of dacha history. In 1897 part of the forest was divided into plots for the Sviatoshyn dachas, and the streets of private homes on both sides of the Berestejske highway survive to this day — next to a forest park, ponds and Sviatoshyn metro.

Character

Sviatoshyn appears in a charter of 1619 and from the 1870s became a place for summer houses and convalescence. The name is most often linked to Prince Mykola Sviatosha, who took monastic vows at the Kyiv-Pechersk monastery in 1106. The dacha character is still visible: low-rise streets, gardens, mature trees and St Nicholas Church from 1907.

Parks and nature

Sviatoshyn Forest Park is a landscape monument of national importance. A chain of Sviatoshyn ponds runs along the Nyvka and Borshchahivka rivers, including the largest ponds in Kyiv — Lake Verkhovyna and Lake Sviatoshynske. To the north lies Bilychi Forest, part of Holosiivskyi National Nature Park since 2014.

Getting around

Sviatoshyn station on the red Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska metro line has been open since 1971. An underpass links it to the railway station, served by the city commuter train to Darnytsia. The main axis is Berestejskyi Avenue, which becomes the Berestejske highway beyond the city limits.

The homes

The highway split the Sviatoshyn dachas in two: Lvivska, Verkhovynna and Kotelnykova streets to the south, Hranychna and Vaskula to the north. This is where buyers look for a detached house with a garden on a modest plot, inside the city and within walking distance of the metro. All around is the high-rise Sviatoshynskyi district with full city amenities.

Schools and universities

Kyiv International University is on Lvivska Street, and Key School Lyceum, formerly Sviatoshyn Gymnasium, is on Irpinska Street. For families with children, that means real choice in education without crossing the whole city.

Who it suits

Those who want a house with a garden or pool in Kyiv itself rather than the suburbs, and who value a forest a few blocks away. The drawback: Berestejskyi Avenue is busy at rush hour, so the metro is the easier way into the centre.
